I have decided to produce a monthly list of British Cycling events that are likely to be of interest to riders (given that the British Cycling website can sometimes be a bit difficult to navigate). So without further ado, here are my pick of events for May 2015 (click on the event name to take you to the event on the British Cycling system):
2 May 2015
A 50 mile race, on CLOSED ROADS, starting and finishing at York Racecourse. Part of the ASO’s Tour de Yorkshire, this event is likely to be one to remember. Open to WE/W1/W2/W3.
10 May 2015
With the HQ at Cottingham, East Yorkshire, this event is part of the Yorkshire Women’s Road Series. Entry open to W2/W3/W4
The event is based in Woodstock, Oxfordshire and covers 50 miles. It is ONLY open to W3/W4. It is one of the ONLY road race of these categories of rider (NB not a circuit race) in the UK. It also boasts a prize fund including £100 for the winner (yes, £100!).
North Wales Road Race Series Race 2
The first event in North Wales for a long time, this event HQ is in Denbigh, North Wales. Open to W2/W3/W4
17 May 2015
This weekend is the Regional Championship weekend
24 May 2015
Okay, not strictly a road race, but one of the best town centre races for atmosphere and experience. Only £15 entry (which is relatively cheap for this kind of event) and it is likely to be televised! Open to WE/W1/W2/W3
PH-MAS VCUK Women’s Spring Road Race
Another round of the Yorkshire Women’s Road Series, this event is based in Selby, near York. Open to W2/W3/W4
Performance Cycles South Cerney Road Race
This event is based in South Cerney, Cirencester and is open to W2/W3/W4.
31 May 2015
Again, not strictly a road race, but it proved to be very popular last year (I watched the live stream from a hotel in Spain!). The women’s event is sponsored by Pure Telecom. It has loads of events for the family as well as adults. Visit www.shrewsburygrandprix.co.uk for more information.
Based around Doncaster town centre, this event is open to W2/W3/W4 and includes a round of the National Paracycling Series. Visit www.doncastercyclefest.com for more information about the course and prizes.
Other events to note – there is a round of the National Women’s Road Series at Hillingdon on 31 May 2015 and the National Masters Women’s Road Race is on 30 May 2015, therefore don’t be afraid to enter Shrewsbury or Doncaster as the “hitters” are likely to be elsewhere!
